Christmas In AustraliaMost people know that Australians celebrate Christmas as well as the American's and other countries, but not everyone understands how traditionally it is a much different experience than what most Americans are used to specifically. Christmas is always celebrated on December 25th in America and other parts of the world. But even though a lot of people celebrate Christmas, they do not necessarily celebrate it on the same day as the Americans do. For instance, the eastern churches, Russian orthodox church and the Ethiopian orthodox churches celebrate Christmas on January 6 or 7th. In Australia, the heat of the summer time really has a heavy impact on the way that the Australians actually celebrate Christmas and also depends on which Northern hemisphere Christmas traditions are chosen to be followed. Weeks before Christmas, houses are decorated, cards are sent, caroling is done, the putting up and lighting of the Christmas tree and then you have the crazy kids running around because they are so anxiously awaiting a visit from Santa. There are a lot of Australians that choose to celebrate Christmas outdoors. Some go to the beach or campgrounds for an extended stay while they are on Christmas break. For instance, people who live in Sydney or visit there usually go to Bondi Beach where approximately 40,000 people spend Christmas day together, whether they know each other or not. Traditionally, almost every Australian tries to participate or join it on an Christmas Eve Carol usually held in Melbourne every year. Then there are huge crowds that gather throughout the country and local towns at churches for a Carols by Candlelight service. Syndney puts on a show called Sydney's Carols in the Domain which attracts many star performers. Australian Christmases are so different from what the Americans are used to words cannot hardly describe. It is one of those things that I can explain, but to truly enjoy and appreciate it, you would just have to go an experience it for yourself. From the types of Christmas plants and flowers all the way to the types of carols sung, to the types of Christmas stories that are told to the children. They even have their own version of the song 12 days of Christmas. There are so many Australian traditions that take place within the few days of Christmas that to list them would take forever. If you are really wanting a different experience for your family this year for Christmas, consider a trip down under.
