History Of Christmas Carols
We all know Christmas carols very well, we all love them and traditionally, most of us sing them during the holiday season. What we do not know is how and where they originated. This article is going to cover some of the more commonly known and popular songs and the history behind each. A lot of Christmas carols were originally written poems and then later converted into songs.
Silent NightThe first of many of the carols that were originally written as a poem and then turned into song was written by Joseph Mohr, in Germany in 1816. In the year 1818, Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber, turned his poem into song and this happens to be one of the most famous Christmas carols of all time.
Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem
This was also written as a poem by Phillip Brooks and then turned into a song a few years later in 1868.
Away In A Manager
This was actually written as a carol by W.J. Kilpatrick and was meant for the kids of a Sunday school class to perform and happens to be one of today's favorites among the children.
Hark The Herald Angels Sing
The lyric writer here was Charles Wesley in 1739 and as a form of an adapted tune from Mendelsohn, W.H. Cummings put the lyrics to music.
O Come All Ye Faithful
This song was originally a Latin song "Adeste Fideles" and was translated into English in 1760.
The First Noel
Was first published in 1833 and has become another one of the most popular carols even to this day.
The 12 days of Christmas
This song was originally developed in England to teach children the meaning of Christmas. There are other songs like Jingle Bells, White Christmas, Blue Christmas, All I want For Christmas Is You and a few others that have been written and made perfect by some of the best all time performersWhite Christmas was written by Irving Berlin, one of the greatest composers of our time and made famous by being sung by Bing Crosby. All I Want For Christmas Is You has become a very popular song within the last 10 years made famous by Mariah Carey. Blue Christmas was made famous by the King of Rock, Elvis Presley who also did his own rendition of Here Comes Santa Clause and took that popular song and made it even more popular. While some of these are not necessarily Christmas carols, they are still certainly a big part of traditional Christmas singing.
